I think Costas had it all wrong

Kaernick felt that this cops murdering black citizens was out of control, and he was right on there. Initially, I didn't particularly agree with his method; but you have to agree it did a lot to bring the topic to the forefront.

The fact that murdering cops are still walking free only proves how important it is to get people,to notice. This seems to work.

      Here's my problem.

If yer walking around, not paying attention, texting, talking on yer cell phone while they are playing the national anthem, it is disrespectful Likewise, a disruptive protest. THAT is disrespectful.

Taking a knee or not participating in the national anthem is a non disruptive protest. In some sense it's thoughtful and patriotic, IMO

I will note that usually the networks prefer to show ads while they are playing the national anthem.

Finally why the fuck do we have that before the game anyway? We don't start out Broadway shows or rock concerts with the National Anthem.

I'm not going to wade too deep into this, but I don't think he missed it. I think he was expressing an opinion on it (in his usual artful way).

But you're right, the owners and the league have spoken. The players are free to sit, stand, kneel, stretch, bounce on a pogo stick, or do handstands during the anthem.

Edit: I guess I missed your point about Kaepernick. But I don't 100% agree with it. I think your odds of being blackballed over the anthem, before yesterday, were directly proportional to your ability to help the team win. Kaepernick wasn't any good, and he was a lightning rod for controversy. Fatal combo. But whatever, after this weekend, nobody's losing their job over anything anthem related.

Tradition. Without looking it up, I'd venture a guess that it started during WWII, for obvious reasons.

Costas wasn't addressing whether the campaign was effective.

He was suggesting a way to remove the controversy over flag disrespect.

And, frankly, I'm not sure whether Kaepernick's objective is now fostered or overshadowed by the issue regarding the flag.

Overshadowed. The act is now the story, whatever he thought he was "raising awareness" (I loathe that term) for is an afterthought.

He's been crossing lines since he entered the Atlantic City Gambling scene in the 80's.
Whats new with this guy? He hasn't changed.

I would consider the cops who killed Eric Garner to be murderers walking free. Alton Sterling's killers too, though a closer case, I suppose, because he had a gun in his pocket (hard to get to it when your arms are pinned, of course). Also the cop who killed Philando Castile. Not sure how you watch that video and think it was a justified shooting...

Let's assume that you are correct about all 3 incidents. You're talking about 3 of literally hundreds of millions police encounters with citizens. I hardly see an "epidemic." Is it an issue that needs to be addressed? Yes. Is it a case of rogue, racist cops looking to kill black men? No.

of course everyone has the right to an opinion. but i hold the president to higher standards than i do pro athletes. if, for the sake of argument, an athlete doesn't observe the anthem for a dumb reason, i really don't care. i find it alarming if the president's priority is to retweet #boycottNFL memes and call players sons of bitches.

as far as kaepernick goes i don't think he's being blackballed. i think it's just not profitable for the owners to sign him. this is because just as trump plays to his base, the NFL plays to theirs, and the demographic that trump was speaking to in alabama also composes a lot of the NFL fan base.

i get that kaepernick alienated a lot of people by wearing pig socks, playing a game of contract chicken while making a statement about "inequality," and wearing a castro t-shirt(!!) to miami. so it's neither racism nor unsurprising that it's not profitable for a team to sign him. but it really does blow my mind that the president will publicly call players sons of bitches and say that the NFL is paying too much attention to brain injuries (the same week that we found out hernandez had stage 3 CTE).
