Concussions and CTE are the NFL's real problems
Originally posted by Dim Bulb View PostFootball used to stand for toughness, America, and uniting through sports. Now it stands for concussions, politics, and CTE. Speaking as the father of a 16 year old boy, he doesn't give a shit any more. No amount of standing, sitting, kneeling is gonna solve this problem.
Question Dimmy? Does your boy play video games? Ever think that might be how he feeds that desire and football is longer nasty enough to get his attention? Pro football came into prominence after WWII, I always looked at it like controlled warfare, George Carlin's comparison between it and baseball ( a far more cerebral sport) was spot on. In this day and age the NFL is compelled to address the serious medical issues that have come to light and are in competition with other forms of 'entertainment' that do a better job of letting our ingrained violent side roam free.
This political sidetrack seems more like Trump exacting revenge on the NFL for not letting him buy the Bills back in the day.The crux of the biscuit is the apostrophe'

Yup
[QUOTE=Birdwatcher;1888347]I heard Ray Didinger put it into perspective when he noted 50 years ago players were aware that they would have physical problems later in life after playing, but none suspected that they might not be able to remember their own name. It is a brutal and violent game that, even with all the rule changes that 'dilute' it, will always be dangerous to the people who play it. Anyone remember 'Jacked up!' on ESPN? The violent nature of football fed a inherent need to vent our own frustrations by watching violence rather than committing it.

He plays video games, works at a hardware store and Snapchats with his homies. He will check the Eagles score on Sunday's and if home will buzz through the family room to check on my emotional fragility during the games. He has no time for it and would rather do other stuff.DB

I think their brand was so bullet proof that they got complacent and have been making mistakes but they did make that bullet proof brand.
More to the point, I think they're reacting to the anthem controversy like just about every good marketer would, not scapegoating it in the hope of alleviating other problems.Obscenity is the last refuge of an inarticulate motherfucker.

Agree for the most part with this

Here's the SI piece on declining ratings from last year.
https://www.si.com/mmqb/2016/10/27/n...ain-viewership
"The NFL and the networks changed the rules and the conduct of the game to make it all about scoring in an effort to boost ratings and attract the casual demographic. And so these new NFL fans and fantasy fans only care about scoring. There is no need to watch an entire broadcast when all you care about is, “Who scored?”
With the RedZone channel, Twitter, highlight shows and a hundred fantasy outlets saturating the airwaves, ratings are down for traditional broadcasts, and they will continue to decline because it’s a lousy way to consume NFL football. The old-timers watched an entire game but are tired of all the commercials, while the newly minted fans happily consume the NFL in short bytes from non-broadcast sources. Why would anybody sit through three hours of commercials when they can get all the scoring plays with an investment of 15 minutes?
The owners, league and networks fell in love—not with their best, most loyal customers, but with the people who weren’t their customers yet. That was a strategic mistake on their part, thinking they could keep the fans they already had AND change the game enough to win over the new set of fans.
It’s kind of ironic that the NFL went hard after the casual fans and got exactly that; casual fans who won’t bother with a three-hour broadcast. The game is still popular, but the gravy train that drives the revenue; network broadcasts, is on the way down. And they’ve got no one to blame but themselves."
They are being undone by their own never-ending unbridled greed.
Anybody who stops watching the NFL over an election or an anthem wasn't really much of an NFL fan to begin with...

I have a 21 year old daughter who is a big gamer

When I hear her playing with her friends on online games I hear the same kind of visceral release I feel when watching football. The diversity of entertainment options is as much a part of declining ratings as anything else, and like everything in life, growth eventually ends and decline is inevitable. The fact that the NFL is so large, and has so many tentacles that are dependent on it, the decline will be slow. This liddle' political diversion seems more like revenge against the owners who would not let a certain someone buy the Bills, along with a way to change a dialogue to fit his agenda.
I'm just hoping that all this anger, hatred, and finger pointing reaches a point where people finally get sick of it and reject it. When it comes to right and wrong, there are few absolutes, what is wrong for you may well be right for someone else. Eating a burger here is just fine, but not so much in India. The problem is trying to force an absolute answer to a problem that is as complex as this one is, and as I asked before, how is taking a knee disrespectful? If it is, what does that say about all the people who kneel in church? From what I just read, Jerruh has ignited problems in his own locker room with players saying his last statement was directly contradictory to what he told them before the AZ game. What would he do if Dak, Dez, and Zeke all chose to kneel at the next game? I doubt it will happen, but it could, and it would be interesting to see.The crux of the biscuit is the apostrophe'

Fake ratings numbers
Ratings have improved recently, not gotten worse.
But don't let that fact get in the way of your hate.John Erlichman, one of President Richard Nixon's closest aides, has admitted America's "War on Drugs" was a hoax designed to vilify and disrupt "the antiwar left and black people" when it was launched in 1971.
