  • What does a good 2nd round pick look like?

I feel like people underestimate the rate at which draft picks fail. For example, from 15-18, the Eagles were one of the most "successful" teams in the draft just by virtue of having a high percentage of picks still on the roster: https://overthecap.com/looking-at-nf...ss-since-2015/

Missing in the second round looks like Jaiquawn Jarrett. The bar for hitting is low. Nate Allen would be considered a "hit." Goedert and Sanders are definitely hits, and DeSean Jackson is a home run.

So...maybe Dougie and Howie thought that with the expanded postseason, and likely 17/18 game regular season on the horizon, a good backup was worth more than another Goedert or Sanders, and maybe even more than a Jackson?

As baffled as I was by the pick, maybe it's unfair to say it's worse than Smith/Watkins.

A new starting QB. Sooner Wentz is gone, the closer we are to another Super Bowl.

A good second round pick has a chance of starting for the team without needing injury to displace the incumbent

This is obviously the problem with the pick, but I guess they’re considering Wentz’s contract a sunk cost, and admitting that they don’t trust him to stay healthy.

Not sure if this is a troll post.

Brian Dawkins. You draft a player who becomes a legend and hall of famer.

Clearly, Dawkins was more than a good 2nd round pick. Players of his caliber do not grow on trees and are not obvious even at the top of the draft. The rate of failure is high. Between injuries and not succeeding at being able to compete against superior talent, most picks don't make it. Most players have to be solid starters (winning your positional battles during a game at least 51% of the time or a lot better) and mostly healthy to stay in the NFL, meaning they have to be above average players. From the elite even being considered from the college ranks., that's a high bar.

Draft picks between rounds 3-5 usually get 1 season and a 2nd training camp to prove they can contribute at which point they have already been replaced. 2nd round picks may get more leeway, and 1st round picks wear out patience with limited progress by the end of their 2nd season. Statistically, undrafted players who get a second contract are exceptionally rare, and those like Jason Peters who become all-pros and likely hall of famers are miracles or unicorns or whatever word you want to use.

When it comes to Eagles 2nd round picks, Hurts may have more upside than Kolb.
