  • This was news to me. NFL is a charity?

    wtf??

As the Super Bowl approaches New York much like a blizzard, here are some things to think about: in 2012, NFL commissioner Roger Goodell was paid $29.5 million to run the organization. And that’s not all. The NFL, if you didn’t realize it, exists as a 501 c 6 organization. It’s not for profit! In […]

I think it's part of how they get around anti-trust laws but I'm not sure.

I wonder how this works for charitable donations. The teams themselves are likely for-profit so buying tickets to games probably can't be claimed.

What about buying tickets to the Super Bowl - especially all of the corporate tickets? Or what about and dues/fees that individual teams pay directly to the NFL? I wonder if that can be written off.

there is a difference between a 501(c)3 and 501(c)6. Namely, you cannot deduct donations. The NFL itself really is just the organization of several for profit businesses and frankly, it really can't exist without some anti-trust benefits (or at least that's what we're told).

Whether that's true or not, is certainly up for debate, but to call the NFL a charity in the sense that a 501(c)3 organization is, is not correct

Much ado about nothing - the individual franchises get most of the money that flows through the NFL entity - and the teams are taxed.

Looks like the PGA is pulling the same scam

The PGA Tour's nonprofit business model has allowed it to avoid paying up to $200 million in taxes over 20 years, and its tournaments -- designed to benefit local charities -- operate short of acceptable charitable practices.

what scam? The IRS approved their registration

EDITED to add: If you're complaining about donations not being enough, I get that. There's lots of issues wrong with charitable donations and how money, once donated, is handled.

2010 The NFL was deemed not to be a single entity but a " cartel" of 32 individual businesses ....thus being subject to antitrust laws...which explains the above article....blah blah blah.

So can I create the PCA (Professional Chumps Association)

Make it non-profit, pay myself a huge salary and give 1% to charity? If so I'm there
