  • Fuel to the fire - Larry Johnson's comments

    It's a sh*t stirring kinda day.

"Knicks’ Larry Johnson calls for all-black basketball league"

    That's not gonna help

and it doesn't make any sense. Larry Johnsnon should be subject to a suspension, just like Donald Sterling. This is stupid. Also, if I'm keeping it all the way real, I don't know if there are enough Black people in a position of power that could realistically own a professional basketball team and all of the cost that goes with it to have a league with more than a few teams in it. Magic, Jordan, Jay-Z, and Diddy are the ones that pop into my head off of the top. Not sure if there are many more after those few.

Go ahead. Good luck with that. So this guy (larry Johnson) thinks the best solution to racism is to have segregation? Brilliant.

Russell Simmons and Master P have to be in the conversation too...although not sure either of them could buy outright alone.

Bottom line, this isn't an argument of the have's and have-not's as people make it out to be...it's the have's and have-more's.

This is the public version of what most of us that work for a company (and CEO) feel every day. I do most of the "work", why are they getting paid that much more than me.

Yeah, most black people are sitting on their couches eating hohos and waiting for their welfare checks. Certainly no millionaires.

Russell could definitely do it, not totally convinced about P.

Russell, Jay, Diddy, Magic, Jordan, Master P (maybe), Oprah, Tyler Perry (maybe). The list is not that long for Black people who can afford to buy and then sustain and NBA franchise. This isn't 1978, franchises don't cost 10 million dollars anymore. You're STARTING in the 300-400 million dollar price range. The Milwaukee Bucks just sold for $550 million. THE MILWAUKEE BUCKS. $550 MILLION DOLLARS. If the Bucks can sell for $550 million, what do you think the Lakers or Heat, or Knicks will go for ? After you figure that out, give me the list of people who you think can afford to buy and run an NBA team at a winning level.

There is a big difference between buying an NBA franchise and owning a professional basketball team.

Doesn't Jordan alreadys have a stake in an NBA team already? I wouldn't think an NBA team is a very good investment. Bad product, guaranteed outrageous contracts, I'm not sure how good the TV deal is, half full arenas, etc.

I'm speaking strictly on a cost level

Yes, there are a lot of rich Black people, but when I think of how many that I know have enough money in the bank to make a serious offer to purchase an NBA team, the ones I listed are really the only ones I can think of. Again, I am speaking solely on cost, not whether or not they are capable of running the show.

Jordan is either majority owner or sole owner of the Bobcats

Aside from the purchase price, you have to factor in employee salaries, arena upkeep, concessions, and a whole host of other costs that come with that.

The article isn't about buying NBA teams, it is about starting a new league. Yes, there are very few people (not just black) that can afford to buy an NBA team, but that is not relevant.

Take soccer as an example. Just because someone can't afford to buy a team in the EPL or Champions league doesn't mean they couldn't afford to buy or run a professional soccer team.

But if Larry Johnson wants to start his own league, with it's own teams, I can only assume that the startup cost for a brand new team will not be cheap. Where will they play games ? Can't play in the NBA's arenas, so there's cost to build arenas for the teams. The only reason I'm focusing on Black people, is because Larry wants an all Black league, so I'm assuming that he wouldn't want any White owners, because that would just defeat the purpose.
