Ironic that a guy who loves stereotypes is a walking, talking stereotype.

I feel bad for your existence bro.

First of all, what I find most offensive about this post is the use of $ instead of the letter "s". Stop being a pussy and pretending that using $ instead of the letter somehow shows that you have a certain level of decorum. When it comes to decorum, you have none, let alone an understanding of race, racism or racial relations with any real depth.

Aside from that, while an argument perhaps can be made that Viking can be used as a derogatory word towards Scandinavian people, you're only making the argument to bolster your ability in modern society to use a separate racial slur. And you're missing the point regarding its definition and its appropriate use.

The difference between Redskin and Viking is that Redskin is used to define a race by its skin color - historically in a derogatory fashion. Viking doesn't define Scandinavian people as a whole - if used that way it can be considered derogatory.

Instead, Viking, as your definition states, defines a specific group of people that performed specific acts during a specific period of time. Using it broadly to define a race makes it derogatory but not if the term is used to define or refer to the historical group.

It would be similar if you called all Mexicans illegals, beaner, etc.. While some Mexicans in the United States are here illegally and others work in fields picking beans, calling the entire race by that term makes it racist and derogatory.

The use of Vikings (or Buccaneers, Raiders, Pirates, etc.) refers to those specific groups in history and are not (and should not) be used to define a specific race or group of people as a whole.

I'm done arguing this. You have your opinion, I have mine. Leave it at that.

In American history, a cowboy is looked upon favorably, but in the greater Philadelphia area, calling someone a Cowboy is as bad as it gets...

                      noun ( sometimes lowercase )
                      1. any of the Scandinavian pirates who plundered the coasts of Europe from the 8th to 10th centuries.
                      2. a sea-roving bandit; pirate.
The Scandinavians seem pretty damn proud of that term as evidenced by the name of this museum:

So I think it's safe to say that until the Native Americans open a "Red$kin museum" you've lost this absurd argument.

What I don't get is why Dannyboy doesn't make the move for money's sake. New logo and slight changes to the colors means everyone buys new hats, tshirts, jerseys, etc.

it's gotta be the easiest way to make cash in the NFL. Plus, "Warriors" is so ripe for the taking. It just makes no sense - he's like the guy you're arguing with who realizes he's wrong, but keeps arguing for argument's sake

                          ...sounds familiar

A cowboy is a migrant farm worker.
John Erlichman, one of President Richard Nixon's closest aides, has admitted America's "War on Drugs" was a hoax designed to vilify and disrupt "the antiwar left and black people" when it was launched in 1971.

when the term Redskin was originated

It was a play on the Indians term Paleface......

so the settlers called them Redskins....I'm not so sold on this term being so racist; but I have never had the opportunity to ask an American Indian; so what the hell do I know! I'm Sicilian and we have been called many things ...affectionately known as Puddle Jumpers. I am not offended in anyway..greaseball WOP Guini..ect,,words only carry the weight which you give them!

I think we live in an Over blown society where Political correctness is like festering pustule..
