I like and support Chip Kelly. I worry about how his personnel decisions are perceived, especially since he doesn't seem to care about perception. These are not mutually exclusive stances.

I agree. They appear to be wrong to me in their perception. But the question is why are they seeing racism where most would agree none exists? Answering, "because they are wrong" or "because they are racist" is not overly helpful to dialogue (not on this Board, but in general).

A racist is someone who seeks to subjugate an entire race due to their race. I don't think most African Americans want to subjugate whites. Some might, though. And the name "racist" is appropriate for that small subset of African Americans.

Similarly, I don't think most whites want to subjugate African Americans. Wouldn't want to guess whether there are more whites seeking to subjugate African Americans versus African Americans seeking to subjugate whites. Unknowable. But probably (hopefully) small numbers on each "side."

But, only one of these groups have centuries of political, legal, societal and cultural history that brings with it a ghost of doubt.

If some African Americans see racism where there is none, maybe they are observing through the lens of those centuries of issues rather than seeking to subjugate whites. They are not racists, they are just coming from a different place.

Show me a successful politician that doesn't consider perception. Same for the head of any major corporation.

Leaders need to consider perception, especially ones who operate in a public forum such as professional sports. Personnel decisions are one easy way for people to judge what it is you value. Chip's policy this off-season of not clearly explaining personnel decisions and the thought process behind them makes him even more susceptible to misperception.

He can control the narrative, but he chooses not to. The longer he does this, the more people will begin to connect the dots and come to their own conclusions.
