EDITED TO ADD: Meaning, changing major aspects of the story they decide to show ... as opposed to streamlining it, which clearly has to be done.

They've done some serious streamlining and moving in new directions already this season.

It raises questions about how important characters are in the books.

Yeah. It hasn't been as good. but books 4 and 5 got boring. I see them try to help with that but there isn't as much action as earlier books seasons. A new conflict needs to break out
