I read that the National Park Service has asked Gettysburg gift shops to remove the Confederate flag from the stores. That's ridiculous to me. This is once place where the symbol has some historical context, and pretending it never existed is just revisionist bullshit.

That's not entirely true. They requested that items that feature the flag as a stand-alone feature be removed.

I can see validity in both sides of this because it is a historical artifact as a historic site. To extrapolate out to Godwin's law though, would a WW2 memorial sell miniature stand-alone depictions of the Nazi party or because they were a combatant?

What I think is pretty ridiculous is Apple removing any games from their app store that have a confederate flag i.e. games specifically about the civil war and its battles. That's historical context and different than the stand-alone symbol.

I'm not talking about (and I don't think the NPS is either) books/dvds/historical documents. The Holocaust Museum in DC has numerous symbols of the Nazi party because it's a historical site and Civil War museums should have Confederate symbols because they're relevant within historical context.

The NPS request was that items that depict solely a Confederate flag items to be removed. To me that suggests miniature flags, stickers, mugs, etc. Things that only depict the flag and have no other context.

Perhaps the NPS meant books/dvds/etc. that solely depict a Confederate flag on the cover as well but that is doubtful in my opinion until clarified to be the case.

I think, in Gettysburg, or any other Civil War site, items that have nothing but the Confederate flag on them are contextually appropriate. I actually think it would be ridiculous to remove them. Just my opinion though.

For sure. I love York. I've always thought it had a southern feel. SB is right about Adams County. My in-laws have a cabin out there. The neighbor used to fly a Confederate flag. Of course you have Gettysburg right there so that plays into it some. I would hate to see Gettysburg have to change anything.

My girlfriend's dad has a house near the battlefield. Kelly Green would be in heaven.

I can understand it but it's true for most old towns in Pennsyltucky. I could take a visitor for a day tour of York or Lancaster and make them think it was the greatest place ever. Or a godforsaken hell hole. You gotta know the area.

That's not even the common "Confederate" flag. It's the battle flag from Tennessee which is rectangular.

I'm not that familiar with Manheim except that it's German. But I have a friend in Mt Joy and hang out there most Sundays. Have to hook up for an Eagle game sometime! Might be some other board members in the area.
